IIT Kanpur was all set for investing in green power strategy and to develop sustainable carbon offsets. As an institution of higher education in the Nation, IIT thought that it is incumbent to lead climate change mitigation strategies. To fulfil its renewable energy commitment, the institution planned to install solar on the vacant roof space in two its buildings 1) Faculty Building 2) Western Lab Building. After multiple site visits and meticulous study of load pattern, analyzing the current electricity charges, energy consumption pattern of the Institution, a capacity of 192kWp Grid Interactive Solar PV was proposed to install.
Key Facts
Project Capacity: 192 MWp
Annual Tons of CO2 saved: 60 Tons
Total Annual Production: 350400 kWh
The installation was carried out in two vacant roofs of 82 kWp and 109.8 kWp
22o fixed tilt configuration
Detailed Description
Welspun Energy Ltd. (WEL) a subsidiary of Welspun Energy proposed to set up 192 kWp Roof top Solar Project at IIT Kanpur. The installation was planned to be set on 2 vacant roofs with a split up of 82 kWp and 109.8 kWp. Gensol provided turnkey solutions and carried out all works which embrace planning considerations, structural surveys, design of system to maximise performance, on-site construction management. The two roofs presented solar installation challenges in the form of skylights, ventilation systems and other roof obstructions making it difficult to determine panel locations due to limited space availability, shading issues and added time restrictions inside the campus. After several design iterations and various panel layouts for both buildings, Gensol finalized designs with a 22o fixed tilt configuration that satisfied both Welspun Energy and the Institution. IIT received a Global Solar Insolation of 4.61 kWh/m2/day and an expected energy generation of 258065 kWh/Year. With final layouts optimized for both module exposure and efficiency, Gensol’s engineers stepped in to develop a roof friendly and safe mounting solution. Total annual production estimated was around 350400 kWh, with annual CO2 savings of 60 Tons. Components were selected, in accordance with market availability, based on operating and functional characteristics, safety requirements and environmental features relative to their physical location. All the components were selected with an appropriate balance of compatibility and selectivity, so as to guarantee targeted repairs and maintenance.
